Fireplace surrounds

Tile and stone fireplace surrounds and feature walls, floor to ceiling, cut around the firebox and the TV.

A fireplace surround installation is the cladding of the wall around a firebox — and often the full wall to the ceiling — in tile, stone or porcelain panels, planned around the firebox clearances, the hearth, the mantel and the television above it.

Fireplaces get used in the valley maybe forty nights a year, which is why so many of them are still wearing 1990s painted brick. A new surround is the fastest way to change the living room: a floor-to-ceiling porcelain slab, a stacked stone wall, a marble face with a floating mantel. It's a feature wall that happens to have a fire in it.

The job has more layout in it than people expect. Clearances to the firebox opening set by the manufacturer, the TV mount and the cables behind it, the hearth height, where the mantel bolts in, and cuts around all of it that don't show. We plan those before the tile is ordered, not on the ladder.

What’s included

Every job
  • Removal of brick, old tile or drywall and a flat, plumb substrate
  • Layout around firebox clearances, mantel, hearth and TV mount, with cable routing
  • Tile, stone, stacked panels or gauged porcelain set in the right mortar for the material
  • Hearth built or re-tiled, mantel reinstalled or a new one mounted
  • Grout, sealer and clean edges where the surround meets the wall and ceiling

02

How it works

Three steps
  1. 01

    Plan the wall

A site visit covers the firebox, the TV, the mantel and the look you want. The estimate includes a drawing of the layout and where the cuts fall.

  2. 02

    Prep the surface

Old brick or tile comes off, the wall is furred and flattened, cable boxes for the TV go in. Big material needs a dead-flat wall.

  3. 03

    Set and finish

Tile or panels set from the hearth up, mantel and TV mount reinstalled, grout and sealer. One wall, completely changed.

Fireplaces by town

Where we do this
  • La Quinta

Great-room fireplaces in La Quinta two-story homes run 18 feet to the ceiling; we scaffold and set gauged panels in two days.

  • Palm Springs

Palm Springs mid-century fireplaces get honed stone and thin brick that keep the proportions the architect intended.

  • Cathedral City

Cathedral City living rooms with 90s painted brick are the most common surround we redo — stacked stone or large-format porcelain over a furred wall.

Fair questions

Fireplace surrounds FAQ

Can you tile over a brick fireplace?

Usually yes. Sound brick gets a skim coat or cement board to make it flat, then tile. Painted or loose brick comes off first. Either way the surround looks like it was always there.

What tile can go around a fireplace?

Porcelain, ceramic, natural stone and gauged panels all handle the heat of a surround; what matters is the manufacturer's clearance to the firebox opening, which we keep. Inside the firebox itself is a different material and a different job.

Can you hide the TV cables in the surround?

Yes — we rough in a cable box and conduit before the surround goes on so the mount and the wires end up inside the wall, not on it.
