Outdoor tile & patios

Patios, walkways, pool decks and outdoor kitchens tiled to survive 118° afternoons and pool water.

Outdoor tile installation is the setting of exterior-rated porcelain, pavers or natural stone over patios, walkways, steps, pool decks and outdoor kitchens — with the slopes, movement joints, slip resistance and sun-tolerant materials the desert demands.

Outdoor tile in the valley has one enemy and it isn't frost: a slab that hits 150 degrees in July, cools 60 degrees overnight, and does it two hundred days a year. Tile that survives that is set with exterior mortar, has movement joints every 8 to 12 feet, slopes away from the house, and is light enough in color that you can walk on it barefoot in August.

Porcelain pavers have taken over outdoor work for good reasons: they don't absorb water, don't fade, don't need sealing and come in slip-rated finishes. Travertine and limestone still win on feel and stay cool underfoot. We install both, over existing concrete or on new slabs, around pools and up steps.

What’s included

Every job
  • Assessment of the existing slab for slope, cracks and drainage
  • Exterior-rated mortar and grout, crack-isolation membrane where needed
  • Movement joints every 8–12 feet and at every edge and column, filled with color-matched sealant
  • Slip-rated porcelain pavers or honed, tumbled stone — chosen for bare feet and wet decks
  • Bullnose or mitered edges on steps, pool coping where the job includes it
  • Sealer on natural stone and a clean site when we leave

How it works

Three steps
  1. 01

Look at the slab and the sun

We check how the patio drains, where the afternoon sun hits and how the tile will meet the house, the pool and the steps. The estimate names the material and the joint plan.

  2. 02

    Prep and membrane

Cracks bridged, high spots ground, slope corrected if water sits. Outdoor tile is only as good as the drainage under it.

  3. 03

    Set for movement

Tile or stone set in exterior mortar, movement joints cut in and sealed, edges finished. Sealed if it's stone, and ready for the next hundred-degree weekend.

Fair questions

Outdoor tile & patios FAQ

What tile stays cool enough to walk on in summer?

Light colors first — white and sand porcelain pavers, honed travertine and limestone. Dark tile and polished finishes get painfully hot. Natural stone generally stays cooler than porcelain of the same color.

Why do outdoor tile floors need movement joints?

Because the slab expands and contracts with the temperature swing, and tile that can't move cracks or tents. Outdoors the industry standard is a movement joint every 8 to 12 feet and at every change of plane, filled with flexible sealant instead of grout.

Can you tile over my existing concrete patio?

If it's sound, sloped to drain and not heaving, yes — that's most of our outdoor work. Badly cracked or settled slabs need repair or replacement first, and we'll tell you which at the visit.
