Tile floor installation

Porcelain, ceramic and stone floors laid flat, straight and tight over the slab.

Tile floor installation is the preparation of a slab or subfloor and the setting of porcelain, ceramic or stone tile over it — flattened, isolated from slab cracks, laid to a planned layout and grouted — so the floor stays flat and tight for decades.

Almost every house in the Coachella Valley sits on a concrete slab, and slabs crack. A tile floor set straight on a cracked slab will telegraph that crack through the tile within a season. The fix is a crack-isolation or uncoupling membrane between the slab and the tile, and flattening the slab first — most are nowhere near flat enough for today's large tile.

That prep is most of the work and all of the difference. With the floor flat to 1/8 inch in 10 feet and the membrane down, the tile itself goes on in clean lines: layout centered on the room, full tiles where you look first, cuts hidden under the baseboards, and grout joints that stay straight from the front door to the back slider.

What’s included

Every job
  • Removal of old tile, carpet or vinyl and the thinset under it, with dust control
  • Slab grinding or self-leveling to the flatness large tile needs
  • Crack-isolation or uncoupling membrane over the slab
  • A dry layout so you approve the pattern and where the cuts fall
  • Tile set in the right mortar for its size, back-buttered where required
  • Grout, sealer, transitions at doorways and baseboards reset or replaced

02

How it works

Three steps
  1. 01

    Measure and plan the layout

Josh measures every room, checks the slab for cracks and flatness, and plans a layout that centers on the main sightline. Your estimate lists tile, prep and schedule.

  2. 02

    Remove and prep

Old flooring out, slab ground flat or leveled, cracks bridged with membrane. This is the slow, unglamorous part, and it's why the floor lasts.

  3. 03

    Set, grout and finish

Tile goes down to the approved layout, is grouted and sealed, and the transitions and baseboards go back on. We clean up and walk it with you.

Tile floors by town

Where we do this
  • Indio

Newer tracts in Indio have post-tension slabs; we scan before cutting any recess and plan movement joints for the long open-plan floors.

  • Rancho Mirage

Whole-house floors in Rancho Mirage estates run 2,000-plus square feet of one tile — layout planning across rooms is the difference between a floor that flows and one that fights every doorway.

  • Cathedral City

Older Cathedral City homes often have saltillo or 12×12 ceramic from the 90s over thick mud beds; demo and leveling are the bulk of the job.

Fair questions

Tile floor installation FAQ

Can you tile over my existing tile floor?

Sometimes, if the existing tile is sound and flat, but it raises the floor and transitions and hides whatever is happening underneath. In most valley homes we take the old tile up, grind the slab and start clean — it's more work and a better floor.

How flat does the floor need to be for big tiles?

For any tile with a side over 15 inches the industry standard is 1/8 inch in 10 feet and 1/16 inch in 2 feet. Most slabs are not that flat out of the gate, which is why grinding or self-leveling is part of nearly every large-tile floor we do.

How long before I can walk on the new floor?

Light foot traffic the day after grouting, furniture back after about three days, and no scrubbing or mopping with chemicals for a week while the grout cures. We lay out the schedule so you can plan around the rooms we're in.

Will the floor crack where my slab is cracked?

Not if it's isolated. A crack-isolation membrane over the crack, or an uncoupling membrane over the whole floor, lets the slab move a little without the tile following. Set straight on the slab, the tile would mirror the crack.
