Kitchen backsplash

Subway, mosaic, slab-look porcelain or hand-made zellige — cut clean around every outlet and cabinet.

A kitchen backsplash installation is the tiling of the wall between the countertop and the upper cabinets — the most visible tile in the house — cut around outlets, windows and hoods so the pattern reads clean from the doorway.

A backsplash is a small job that everyone looks at every day, so the details carry it: a layout that starts from the center of the range and ends in equal cuts at both sides, outlets that land in the middle of a tile instead of a grout line, and edges finished with a profile or a bullnose instead of a raw cut.

It's also the quickest way to change a kitchen. Most backsplashes take a day to set and a morning to grout, with the kitchen usable the whole time. Hand-made zellige and glass mosaics take longer and more care; large-format porcelain slabs need two sets of hands and exact templates. We do all of it.

What’s included

Every job
  • Removal of the old backsplash and wall repair where it comes off rough
  • Layout centered on the range or sink, with outlet covers and switches realigned
  • Tile set in thinset with the correct trowel for the tile — mosaics, subway, slab porcelain, zellige
  • Finished edges with metal profiles or bullnose, caulked at the counter and cabinets
  • Grout sealed, outlets and covers reinstalled, kitchen cleaned

02

How it works

Three steps
  1. 01

Pick the tile, plan the lines

Bring samples or we bring them. Josh measures, plans where the pattern starts and ends, and quotes it with a date — usually within a week or two.

  2. 02

    Set it

The old splash comes off in the morning, the wall is repaired and the new tile is set by the afternoon. Outlets are pulled forward so covers sit flat on the tile.

  3. 03

    Grout and clean

A short second visit to grout, caulk the counter line, seal and reinstall the covers. You cook dinner that night.

Backsplashes by town

Where we do this
  • Rancho Mirage

Rancho Mirage kitchens often pair slab-look porcelain with waterfall islands; we template the splash to match the counter veining.

  • Palm Desert

Condo kitchens in Palm Desert with 4-inch granite upstands: we remove the strip, repair the wall and run tile from the counter up.

  • Bermuda Dunes

Bermuda Dunes homes with open-shelf kitchens take full-height splashes behind the range wall — brackets and outlets planned before the tile.

Kitchen backsplash FAQ

How long does a backsplash take?

One day to set and a short second visit to grout for most kitchens. Zellige, glass mosaic and full-height slab porcelain take two to three days because of the cutting and the handling.

What's the difference between subway tile and zellige?

Subway tile is machine-made and uniform; zellige is hand-glazed Moroccan clay tile with variation in every piece. Zellige is set with tight joints and shows every bump by design, so layout and sorting take longer. Both are beautiful; one is a lot more forgiving to install.

Can you run the backsplash to the ceiling or behind open shelves?

Yes, and it's the most common upgrade request. Full-height tile behind the range or across a wall with open shelving changes the whole kitchen; we plan the outlet positions and shelf brackets before the first tile.
